Post-Storm Roof Inspection Tips

When a strong storm hits your area, your roof takes the brunt of the damage. Even a high-quality, durable roof may sustain some damage during a strong storm, and this needs to be dealt with promptly.

Post-Storm Roof Inspection Tips

Anchor Roofing and Exteriors, your local roofer, shares post-storm roof inspection tips to keep in mind.

Start in the Attic

You’ll want to start your post-storm inspection in the attic. Look out for holes where leaks may form when it rains. You can tell if the roof has these tiny holes if sunlight is entering your attic through the roof. If there are no visible holes, you’ll want to use your flashlight to inspect the deck. Keep an eye out for dark stains and streaks, as well as parts that appear to be sagging. These are all consequences of moisture damage due to the storm.

Check the Outside

You don’t have to climb onto your roof to perform this part of the inspection. Simply use a pair of binoculars to examine your system from the ground. Missing, cracked or curled shingles are all warnings that the roof has been compromised.

You’ll also want to check the gutters, specifically the portion of the roof where they are installed. Exceptionally strong winds can actually pull at the gutters away from your home and cause damage to the roof edge.

You also want to be mindful of the flashings. These thin metal strips cover the roof valleys and the vents of the roof and can easily get torn off or blown away by strong winds. If the flashings have sustained damage, you’ll want to have them repaired or replaced as soon as possible to prevent water intrusion.

Once you’re done with your preliminary inspection, you’ll want to contact your local roofing company. While it may be tempting to do the repairs on your own, local roofers are better equipped and trained to handle the delicate process of repairing storm-damaged roofs.
